Description
I am leaving the position of Criminal Law Columnist for LawNow so this will be my last contribution in this setting, although I will continue to write occasional articles on subjects of interest from time to time. I have been writing this column for four years, and I leave with an appreciation of what it takes to be able to come up with provocative, intelligent and informative (which I hope my comments have been; I guess only the reader can say for certain) contributions on a regular basis. Towards the end of my time as columnist I found it more and more difficult to come up with something new and insightful (again, I hope readers have found my comments to have been along these lines). The editors have had to extend me more and more patience--and the deadlines longer and longer. If nothing else, I leave with a much greater appreciation of what it must take to produce something like this on a daily or weekly basis. I am certainly not stepping down because of a shortage of criminal law-related issues or concerns. Every day it seems there are new "initiatives" in the area of criminal law, although most do not seem likely to move us forward and to contribute in any positive or lasting way to society's struggle against crime. Regular readers of this column will know that I am no fan of the current government's "more jail for more people more often" approach to crime prevention.
